Pizza, Pasta, McDonald's & Fry Ups Top Beach Holiday Meal Choices

Posted by Sue Anderson, 2nd Jun 2015

Do your holiday meal choices vary wildly from what you'd normally eat at home? There are often such a range of foods available, particularly in all inclusive accommodation deals, that holidaymakers are spoilt for choice.

We spoke to 2,187 people aged 18 and over from around the UK, who had all been on a beach holiday abroad in the last 12 months. We asked them all about their eating and drinking habits on their last holiday, to find out more about the foodie habits of Britons abroad.

Steak, Fish and Indian Meals Feature in Top 5 Most Popular Evening Holiday Meals

Initially, everybody taking part was asked 'What was your preferred evening meal choice during your last holiday abroad?' We asked people to take into account both eating out and eating at their accommodation. According to our results, the most popular beach holiday evening meal choices were as follows:

1. Pizza - 17%

2. Pasta - 15%

3. Steak - 13%

4. Fish - 11%

5. Indian - 7%

Sandwiches, Chips and Pizza Top Beach Holiday Lunch Choices

Next up, we asked about respondents' preferred lunch choices during their last holiday abroad, in terms of what they had ordered most frequently. The top five results were as follows:

1. McDonald's - 18%

2. Fry Up - 16%

3. Sandwich - 14%

4. Chips - 10%

5. Pizza - 8%

Three Quarters of Britons Eat More on Holiday Than at Home

When we asked if they tended to eat more when away on holiday than when at home in the UK, 76% of the people taking part in our poll told us that they did. Anyone whose last holiday abroad was not on an all inclusive basis was asked how much they spent on food or snacks per day during their trip. The average answer stated by those taking part was the equivalent of £30 per day, per person.

Respondents were next asked if they had tried the local cuisine of the destination they visited during their last trip. Only 12% of respondents said that this was the case for them.

Pizza seems to be a popular choice for holidaymakers, making it into the top five lists for both lunch and dinner. Usually, the food found in restaurants around beach resorts tends to follow a similar pattern. You can almost always find the food that you would normally eat at home in restaurants overseas, with Italian and Indian restaurants particularly commonplace in beach resorts. We weren't surprised to see the fast food chain McDonald's appearing in the lunch list, because you can quite literally find a Big Mac meal anywhere you travel to these days!
