How Often Do You Feel Like You Need to Get Away?

Posted by Sue Anderson, 10th Feb 2015

There are plenty of stressful situations in life that can make us feel like hopping on the next plane to a sunny beach resort somewhere. How often do you get the feeling that you need a holiday?

We polled 2,117 people aged 18 and over from around the UK and asked them questions about holidays and their lifestyle. We wanted to find out the extent to which life can sometimes leave people feeling in desperate need of a quick getaway.

The 'need a holiday' feeling strikes 156 times per year

Everyone polled was initially asked, 'How often do you get the feeling that you need a holiday?' to which the average answer stated was '3 times' per week. That adds up to 156 times over the course of a year! That's a lot of daydreaming about holidays...

When we asked if they tended to actually verbalise the feeling that they needed a holiday to those people who were around them, 78% of the relevant respondents admitted that they said it out loud.

Work is mostly to blame for the 'need a holiday' feeling

We then asked everyone taking part in our poll what most commonly made them feel as though they 'needed' a holiday (and they were able to select more than one answer), which revealed the following top 10 responses:

1. Work/Job - 49%

2. Family life - 38%

3. Bad weather - 35%

4. Relationship issues - 29%

5. Social media envy - 27%

6. Poor health - 22%

7. Wanting to get a tan - 19%

8. Boredom - 17%

9. Desire to travel/see places - 14%

10. Want to meet someone - 12%

68% of people told us that, during a holiday, they are already thinking about their next trip away. Who isn't?

It's all too easy to start feeling as though you're in dire need of a holiday, especially when the stresses and strains of everyday life start to wear you down. To see that we think this more than 150 times a year is incredible, though! It's important to try and take a break at least once a year, even if you can't stretch to going very far. Taking time out is key to avoiding burnout.

The beginning of the year is when most people start thinking about their annual holiday plans, so why not book a break? There's no time like the present.
