Beaches

On the north coast the waters are calm and you can choose from the black sand beach which is set in a cove at the village of El Tamaduste, the rocky beach of Charco Manso or, Pozo de las Calcosas which has 2 natural swimming pools set into lava rocks.

On the east coast, the water is not so calm but there is a black sand beach near the Puerto de la Estaca and a rocky beach at the small town of La Caleta.

Things to Do

The town of Valverde comprises steep narrow streets of low rise white-washed buildings, squares and gardens. The most important buildings are the Town Hall and the 18th century Parish Church, housing a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. You can also visit the Ethnographic Centre - the Case de las Quinteras, which is a great place to buy locally produced craft works and see traditional artisan workshops.

The Homage to La Bajada is large sculptures depicting scenes from the islands religious festival, the Descent of the Virgen de los Reyes. It is an interesting project, in that the sculptures are created from broken household appliances, car parts and other urban waste; which also involved the island's school children in the value of recycling.

Out and About

At the small agricultural town of Isora, home to the island's cheese-making factory, you can enjoy panoramic vistas from the viewing point on the cliffs. There is also good walking territory around the rural farming village of San Andres.

The second largest town in the Valverde region is Mocanol; a traditional, agricultural town with a 15th century church and views over the north coast.

For great views over the west coast, try the Mirador de La Pena, designed by Cesar Manrique. The restaurant serves dishes created with local produce from it's cliff top setting, surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows and attractive stone terracing.
