Cheap Holidays to Tobago

Tobago is only 26 miles by 7 miles, offers warm and sunny weather with fresh trade winds and is as pretty as a picture.

The central part of the island is covered with the oldest rainforest in the western hemisphere and is home to many species of wildlife that are usually only found on the mainland.

With it's fair share of deserted white sandy beaches, the lifestyle in Tobago is slow and relaxed. Tobago is surrounded by one of the most amazing coral reefs in the world with many coming here to dive and snorkel in the famous Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park.

How Hot?

There is no bad time to visit Tobago, located just 11º north of the equator; the island enjoys a tropical climate with warm and sunny weather averaging at 83ºF all year round.

Tobago has two seasons with the wet/hurricane season from June to November and the dry season running from December to May. Though even in the dry season rain is still expected, generally falling in short sharp bursts, and helping to keep the island lush and green.

While the likelihood of a direct hit is small, if travelling during hurricane season, we recommend you check your travel insurance policy before you leave, and shop around if necessary to make sure you have the necessary cover.

Out and About

At just 42km long by 10km wide, the small Caribbean island of Tobago offers an unspoiled haven for eco-tourists and bird-watchers, relaxing and secluded beaches, 2 championship golf courses and plentiful opportunities for snorkelling, scuba diving and other water sports.

Some of Tobago's most beautiful beaches are Pigeon Point, on the south-western point; Englishman's Bay, Castara Bay and Turtle Beach on the Caribbean coast; Pirates Bay and Batteaux Bay on either side of the northern point and; the private beach at Canoe Bay on the south coast.

Fishing is very popular all year round, but if you want to land marlin, swordfish and sailfish, the deep sea sport fishing season runs from October to June. Hikers might enjoy a guided tour into the Main Ridge Forest Reserve or following the Gilpin Trace downhill from the mountains to Bloody Bay. There are also guides available for the two forest trails which lead to the top of Pigeon Peak; Tobagos highest mountain.

A popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving is the protected marine park and coral reef at Buccoo Reef. You can take a glass bottom boat trip to the reef and can also swim in the warm shallow waters of the Nylon Pool, which sits in the middle. If you're near Buccoo Beach on a Sunday, make a visit to the nearby Kimme Museum to see the fascinating life-size sculptures in the afternoon and return to Buccoo Village for the evening to soak up the local atmosphere at the Sunday School street party.

Scarborough is the main harbour town where you can soak up the local culture with a visit to the Saturday market and relax in the colourful Botanical Gardens. Just outside of the town you can visit the well preserved 18th century Fort King George. If you wish to visit the neighbouring island of Trinidad, the ferry runs from Scarborough to the Port of Spain and takes around 2.5 hours.

Plymouth is the second largest town on Tobago and you can admire fabulous views over the Bay from the remains of Fort James or from the preserved ruins of Fort Bennett. In the near vicinity you can visit the Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve or amble through the trails at the Grafton Caledonia Bird Sanctuary. There is a further bird sanctuary on Little Tobago Island, to which boats depart from the charming fishing village of Speyside.

Speyside is also another good spot for diving and trips to Angel Reef. It is also in easy reach of the fishing village of Charlotteville where you can watch the local fishermen at work or stroll up to the landscaped grounds of Cambleton Battery and admire the views over Hermitage Bay.

Tobago Cocoa Estate offers you the chance to tour a working cocoa plantation and learn a little of the its heritage and production methods. You can also stay for lunch or dinner and sample the award winning chocolate bars. Whilst in the area, you might want to visit Tobago's highest waterfall at the Argyle Waterfalls.

Out for Lunch!

Tobago has a diverse multicultural, multiracial population and this is shown in the cuisine, offering an interesting culinary fusion that greatly differs from the typical foods found elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Curry and roti are national favourites; roti is a flour pancake very much like a tortilla, and is traditionally wrapped around a meat and potato curry. Other Tobago specialities include crab and dumpling, where the crab is stewed with curry and coconut milk and served over flat flour dumplings; coconut bake, a type of bread made with grated coconut, often eaten at breakfast with buljol (saltfish) or cheese; and oildown, which is breadfruit, combined with salted meat and boiled down in coconut milk.

There is a wide variety of good restaurants on offer, from local specialities to international cuisines, such as Chinese and Italian restaurants. Many of the islands fine-dining restaurants are open air, and often in idyllic locations providing the perfect backdrop to enjoy your meal. For a bite on the go, there are island-wide roadside food stalls offering popular traditional foods and snacks.
