Symi

Symi Hotels

Symi is for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the larger Greek islands, and also those who place local character and charm high on their list of priorities. The focal point of Symi is the harbour where many candy coloured buildings can be found built amphitheatrically around it.

How Hot?

The climate on Symi is typical of Greek islands consisting of long hot summers and short mild winters, with the summer months enjoying 10-13 daily hours of sunshine.

June, July and August are the hottest months on Symi with average temperatures of 80-84ºF (27-29ºC), and sometimes even reaching the nineties.

Out and About

Symi has the most beautiful harbour in Greece and is split into 2 parts, Chorio above and Yialos below which are linked by a wide street and nearly 400 steps. Each area has it's own atmosphere and a good variety of shops and tavernas.

There is lots to see and do here but perhaps the most important sight on the island is the monastery of the archangel Michael. It was originally built in the 6th century but has been restored. There are also two museums and a tavern on site so definitely worth a visit. The Castle of the Knights and the archaeological museum can also be seen in the upper area of Symi. There are many other churches throughout the island that date back to Turkish rule.

There are many boat trips on offer, one of which goes to Turkey, where you can experience a different culture which makes for an interesting day out. Boat trips to and from Rhodes are also popular but can make the harbour a busy place with the many people coming to the island from Rhodes.

The beaches on Symi are mainly pebble but the water is crystal clear which is just perfect for snorkelling among the rainbow coloured fish and other marine life. Other activities on Symi include walking as there is so much to see and it will get you away from the busy harbour area.

Out for Lunch!

Symi is known for its traditional Greek food as well as Italian and International cuisine. Try some of the local dishes including Moussaka, Souvlaki and Tzatziki.

Most Greeks eat their food in the form of a meze where a variety of starters are served altogether, set in the middle of the table and everyone helps themselves. Gialos and Ano are where you will find a great selection of restaurants and tavernas.
