The resort

Sharm el Sheikh stretches for around 35km with a protected national park at each end of the coastline. Once a small Bedouin settlement the resort has transformed into a popular tourist destination where the hotels are clustered around the bays and sit side by side along the coastline making up mini-resorts within Sharm el Sheikh.

Nabq Bay is around a 30-minute drive from Naama Bay and is quickly developing into a resort town of its own; consisting mainly of large hotels which line the long stretch of beach it's a popular with families due to the shallow beach and good facilities. There are numerous bars and restaurants, an outdoor shopping area and a nightclub.

Just south of Nabq and around 10km north of Naama are the smaller bays of White Knights and Sharks Bay; a popular diving spot and home to a number of large luxury hotels. The area offers a selection of restaurants and cafes some of which are found on the beach, while in White Knights Bay, Soho Square offers bars, restaurants, a club and no hassle shops plus an ice skating rink and bowling alley.

Due to its lively reputation and the main centre of entertainment in Sharm, with a wide choice of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and shops to suit all tastes and ages, Naama Bay is a very popular area for tourists to stay and visit. Its beachfront promenade is lined with hotels, bars and restaurants; the beach itself is long, sandy, and busy.

Ras Um Sid (and Hadaba as the cliff top area is known) links Naama Bay and Sharm El Maya. It offers a variety of hotels suitable for most budgets, with sandy stretches of beach and great areas for snorkelling and diving.

Sharm El Maya is the original resort of Sharm el Sheikh and is a quieter option from nearby Naama Bay though still within a reasonable taxi fare to enjoy its lively night scene. This area offers a good selection of accommodation choices to suit most budgets, a variety of restaurants and cafes and a 1.5km sandy beach. The downtown area is home to the popular 'old market'.

Things to do

The coast of Sharm El Sheikh is lined with beaches and coves, and excellent dive sites, with healthy coral reefs and a wide range of underwater wildlife. Scuba diving is the main activity in Sharm with numerous dive centres available along the coastline, it's also a great place to experience waterskiing, wind and kite surfing. Glass bottomed boats provide an alternative view point to enjoy the beautiful underwater world.

On land there are many leisure and tourist facilities from golf to ice-skating, bowling alleys to water parks, and casinos to luxurious spas, as well as numerous excursions with options to explore the local area, or overnight stays in Luxor and Cairo.

Out and about

Dining options in Sharm el Sheikh are numerous, with a wealth of different culinary options available, including well known fast food chains and some exclusive a'la carte restaurants. In the Sharm El Maya area not restaurants serve alcohol, though many will allow you to bring your own, ensure to check before you dine.

Sharm offers a vibrant night scene with something offered for all tastes and ages, most hotels throughout the resort feature bars, restaurants and entertainment ideal for families. While those wanting to be up all night Naama Bay has numerous nightclubs including Pacha, Ministry of Sound, Buddha Bar and Hard Rock Café.

Shopping choices are varied around the resort from bartering at the traditional local bazaars and the old market to splashing the cash at the thoroughly modern Il Mercato shopping mall home to a number of well known designer names.
