The nearest beach is Los Gigantes which is approx 20 minutes (13km) of scenic and fairly easy driving down through the mountain. At Los Gigantes you have a dark sand beach sheltered by the harbour wall with direct views to the famous cliffs.
Things to Do
The focal point of Santiago del Teide is the pretty Church of San Fernando Rey and it's square. Next to the church, the La Casona Del Patio has a restaurant and stables if you would like to go horse-riding. Across the road from here there is a picnic area with bench tables and plenty of shade under the trees.
Explore the Teno Natural Park. Just 5km away, the little village of Masca has an ethnographic museum and is sandwiched between towering mountains with viewpoints to the sea. A few minutes further into the park, you can look back over the canyon and see Masca terraced into the side.
Explore the Teide National Park. Volcano Chinyera, which sits next to Mount Teide is just 8km away and there is a circular walk (1 to 3 hours) which you can follow through the pine forests and along the lava paths.
Out and About
There are few amenities in the village of Santiago del Teide but there is a couple of mini-markets, a chemist and a handful of cafe bars and restaurants. There is also a children's playground approx 100 metres along from the church.
Los Gigantes (13km) is a long established and popular sea-side resort, famous for it's sheer cliff face. It has a dark sand beach, a Cesar Manrique designed lido and plentiful cafe bars and restaurants. The Marina is located between the beach and the El Laguillo lido and from here you will have a good choice of boat trips including diving and fishing trips as well as the popular dolphin and whale watching trips.
In the opposite direction, Garachico (21km) is approx 35 minutes drive. This charming little town has a wealth of history to share, pretty plazas and gardens, tapas bars and bistros. Being a popular stop-off on sight-seeing tours, the shops also cater well to tourists seeking an authentic souvenir. Between the harbour and the historic Castillo San Miguel you will find the famous rock pools which are popular for bathing, diving and snorkeling.
