Quieter Spanish resort. Great for a relaxing holiday. Would recommend the day trip to Cabo de Gata with Pepe tours. Beautiful place and very interesting.

This was a restful holiday for us after a busy summer working. We found plenty of sunbeds to lounge on and sleep, read or watch the world go by. There was a shopping area where we could wander around and stop for a drink or something to eat and a tourist train that took us for a 40 minute ride around the area for only 5 euros each. Roquetas is a very large resort and well worth a visit. The main town is only a short bus ride away with its bullring, aquarium and auditorium.

The beach is big and sandy. Few restaurants and bars on the promenade. Nice place to go for a lunch or dinner.

This resort is a hidden gem. Lovely beach and pedestrianised walkway. Plenty of reasonably priced shops, tapas bars and restaurants. Suzis tapas bar we bought 2 large beers for 7 euro and got free tapas of 2 small plates of chicken wings with chips and bread. Marcs bar for full English breakfast with tea or coffee for 5 euro each. We had a lovely spa morning at the Playasol hotel with heated pools, jacuzzis, saunas, steam room, ice bath, rain shower and more. Tip: go on a Wednesday and get 2 for 1. We had fantastic weather of blue skies every day and 28 degree temperatures. About an hour transfer from Almeria Airport. Would highly recommend this resort.

Beaches

The blue flag beaches of Roquetas de Mar run the entire length of the resort and beyond, some are sand, some have shingle but none are ever too crowded. In fact you can walk along the beach all the way to the neighbouring resort of Aguadulce (5km) to the east of the harbour and to Puntas Entinas Sabinar natural park (4km) to the west of the harbour. There are good facilities for water sports including jet skiing and water skiing as well as sailing and fishing.

Things to Do

Golfers will be pleased to find a golf course at the western end of the resort, Playa Serena Golf Club. A further golf course, La Envia Golf Course, is approx 15 minutes drive away. Walkers and birdwatchers will appreciate the natural environment of the salt flats and marshlands that lay behind the beach at the Puntas Entinas Sabinar.

Next to the marina you will find the Castillo de Santa Ana housing a museum and, next to that, the Roquetas de Mar lighthouse. Other historic and cultural attractions including the crumbling Arabian watchtower of Torre de Cerrillos and the bull ring which is located at the northern edge of the town, next to the municipal football stadium.

For family fun there is a small sea life centre, a karting track and an aqua park. Especially for the kids there is a great little amusement park with bumper cars, trampolines, mini golf and bouncy castles.

December 29th is a busy day in Roquetas, when locals flock to the beach for the fish barbecues, music and fun that define the Moragas festival.

Out and About

There are many bars and restaurants in the resort offering a wide variety of international menus but there is still a strong Spanish influence and you will be easily be able to dine on traditional Spanish fare, including tapas, cakes and pastries. The marina is another good spot for tapas bars and restaurants.

Just a little further out from the bull ring, which also houses bars and restaurants, you will find the Parque Commercial Gran Plaza, packed with international stores, designer brands, cafes and fast food outlets. The local street market is held on Thursday mornings and has over 250 stalls.

Nearby Attractions

The sports and leisure resort of Almerimar is approx 25km drive along the coast to the east and the resort of Aguadulce with its sandy beach and marina is approx 9km drive to the west. The main town of Almeria and its imposing fortress of Alcazabar (21km) is just 24 minutes drive away and the diverse landscapes of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata can be reached in approx 1 hour.

The Oasys Theme Park in the Tabernas desert offers a great day out for all ages, with its staged Wild West town and themed shows as well as a safari zoo.
