Pollensa

The picturesque town of Pollensa was built inland from its port area, Puerto de Pollensa, a tradition of many Majorcan towns to protect against pirate attacks. Situated close to the Serra de Tramuntera mountain range and surrounded by lush countryside, Pollensa makes a great base for exploring the area, whether by car, foot or bicycle.

The beach

The nearest beaches to Pollensa are unsurprisingly the two beaches found at the coastal resort of Puerto de Pollensa. There is a beach either side of the marina, both of which are long and sandy with clear shallow water, ideal for families. The beach north of the marina is known as Albercutx beach (also known as Voramar beach); this beach is narrow and runs for 2 km in front of the Pine Walk, while the Pollensa beach starts at the south of the marina and stretches for almost 4 km.

Both beaches offer good facilities with sun-loungers and umbrellas to hire, along with a variety of watersport activities including banana rides, jet-ski, pedal boats and kite surfing.

Things to do

The town square is the starting point for the famous 365 Calvario Steps which lead to a hillside chapel affording stunning views of the area for those who make it to the top; within the square there is an impressive 13th century church, a central fountain and several traditional cafes and restaurants.

The area is littered with walking and hiking trails, making it a popular choice with ramblers. Golfers will find the nearest course just outside of the town, Golf Pollensa which is a 9-hole course, while the nearest 18-hole course is Alcanada Golf around 13 km away.

Out and about

Pollensa is a small town with all its amenities accessible by foot, within its town square there are several cafes and restaurants to enjoy, and a number of art galleries to peruse. Market day in the town is Sunday, and can be very busy with tourists from nearby resorts.

Nearby attractions

Nature lovers and bird spotters will enjoy the S'Albufereta Natural Reserve and the larger S'Albufera Natural Park, these large areas consist of marsh, lakes, riverside woodland and coastal ecosystems, and are packed with wildlife and many species of bird.

The nearby resort of Alcudia offers plenty of attractions, families will love the Hidropark which offers pools, waterslides, mini-golf and much more, there is also the Laberinth Maze and a large karting track. Alcudia is also a city of historical interest with its Roman walls, a Roman theatre, a small Roman church and even a 19th century bull-ring.
