The resort is small and very quiet, which we liked. There is a beach close by, black sand and always windy so you don't get too hot. There are also a handful of small bars and restaurants by the beach very reasonably priced as well. A tour company Natours have an office next door to La Caleta Apartments, they are excellent value and very friendly staff and guides. We went on 3 tours with noisy Rosie superb if a little scary on some of the bendy roads to the Caldera.

The resort was very small and we would have given five stars had there been a few more places to eat, other than that it was very peaceful and charming.

On the wetter, windier side of the island, but a great base from which to explore.

Beaches are about a fifteen minute stroll from the apartments. There are a good selection of bars, restaurants and shops. The beaches are black volcanic sand. Facilities are good, with very well thought out coastal pathways. The capital, Santa Cruz, is about 3.5 miles away. It is a good walk there, but all uphill on the way back. Taxi about €7 and busses run regularly.

For sightseeing, you really need to hire a car, which can be done very reasonably from various offices in the town. Do not miss Rocque de los Muchachos. Spectacular scenery across the whole island and European observatory and telescopes. The roads are steep and very windy, but well worth the effort. Also the stargazing Safari is not to be missed. The constellations and stars are incredible. But be warned it gets very cold at night when you get to the high ground, even in summer.

The resort, as is the whole island, is very quiet, with bars and restaurants closing at 10pm. So if you want clubs and nightlife, go to Tenerife. This is a beautiful unspoilt island and I hope it stays that way for a long time to come.

Playa de Los Concajos is a small town on the east coast, very clean with the beaches well looked after. There is plenty to do here with hikes and excursions available if you want to see more of La Palma. The restaurants are amazing value and offer a range of local cuisine. All in all I would definitely go back and would certainly recommend Playa de Los Concajos.

Great location. 5 minutes bus ride from airport on no 500 bus 1.37 euro. Close to sea and mountains. Buses all round the island for a couple of euro. Good selection of restaurants and supermarkets. The best tourist information you will ever find. The man who runs it knows everything and is so eager to help. Los Cancajos is a fantastic location.

Isolated from the main town of Palma. Very few eating places (November). Walk on coastal path was only 2km, then a dead end. A walk to Palma involves some steep hills and walking through an industrial estate, (1 hour for 2 oldies) - this is the only paved walk from the resort.

Two cruise ships arrived on the same day when we were in Palma. 3000 plus visitors. Price of a coffee doubled on that day. Bus service excellent to all parts of the island. Roads are torturous. Climate in November fantastic 24.5c every day with humidity 65 per cent max. Local produce for self catering buffs was brilliant and averaging out no more expensive than the UK. People watching very limited as was evening night life. It suited our requirements but younger people could be very disappointed. We rate Lanzarote at one hundred percent and Palma on the same scale 45 percent.

Sadly this side of the island doesn't get guaranteed sunshine, which we found out about on our week there!

Beaches

Los Cancajos beach is quite long and wide (approx 400 metres by 35 metres) and very popular. It is backed by a cliff and protected from the sea by a reef and man-made breakwaters, created from rocks to form 3 bays. Nevertheless, it can still be quite windy but the waves are much tamer than alternative beaches along the coast. The beach is made of black sand and there are toilets, car parking, shops and restaurants nearby.

Things to Do

There are PADI diving centres in the resort running courses and trips to the numerous diving spots all around the east, south and west coasts of La Palma. The volcanic activity around the island makes for an interesting underwater landscape of lava arches, caves, canyons and cliffs.

Spend a day at Santa Cruz de la Palma, maybe do a little shopping and stop for lunch. The historic quarter has narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional Canarian styled buildings with wooden balconies. You can sit in the town squares, soak up the atmosphere in the terrace cafes and stroll along the waterfront promenade.

The quiet little town of Fuencaliente, surrounded by rugged cliffs and banana plantations, is best known for it's proximity to the San Antonio volcano. You can follow the walking trail from the Fuencaliente Visitor Centre around the rim of the San Antonio volcano, passing the Teneguia volcano down to Punta Fuencaliente. At Punta Fuencaliente there is a small dark sand and pebble beach, a wide expanse of salt pans and a little museum attached to the old lighthouse. If you time it right, you will be able to get the bus back.

Out and About

In the resort of Playa de los Cancajos there is a good choice of bars and restaurants offering international menus as well as Canarian cuisine. There are also mini-markets, a children's play area and a few tourist shops.

Nearby Attractions

At Brena Alta, the Acropark offers an adrenalin adventure through the pine forests with different circuits suitable for adults and children. All circuits commence with safety training and include rope walks, high bridges and zip lines.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, maybe take a stroll around the lush and tropical Maroparque Botanic Garden and Animal Park instead.
