Map of Los Realejos
Los Realejos is an inland town but the dark sands of Playa del Socorro are just 3km away. The beach enjoys a natural setting and is popular with body boarders and surfers. There are car parking spaces behind the beach and a beach bar. There are two other natural beaches in Los Realejos; Playa de Castro and Playa de Fajana, both of which are quite remote and also have dark sands.
Things to Do
Follow the Rambla de Castro coastal path from the Mirador San Pedro restaurant (both signposted) through the banana plantations and along the cliffs to the San Fernandez fort.
At the foot of the La Montaneta volcano (approx 4km from the centre of Los Realejos) you will find the Monastery Inn. The complex has 5 restaurants including the Cafe Mirador which has views across the Oratava Valley to the sea; Bodega San Pedro which offers traditional Canarian cuisine in a charming rustic atmosphere; a seafood restaurant and a fondue restaurant. There is also a delicatessen and wine shop filled with home-made produce, gardens and walking paths.
Out and About
Realejo Bajo is an attractive town with tree-lined shopping streets, colourful buildings and pretty plazas. The streets are also lined with something else - car parking spaces! and that is most likely because they are all very steep. As this is a traditional working town the shops are more your everyday sort but there are plenty of pavement cafes, tapas bars and bistros to choose from. In the old quarter of Realejo Bajo you will find the old church and it's plaza complete with bandstand, which is set above a cafe.
As you head up to Realejo Alto you will see the spire of the Church of the Santiago Apostle, set against a backdrop of the Tigaiga Mountains. The church dates back to the 15th century and it's square is a good spot to sit a bench and admire the views. Keep ascending through the narrowing streets and you will see more pretty squares and Canarian architecture and, on the mountain road, you can stop at the Mirador del Lance for extensive views across the valley to the sea.
The world famous and highly acclaimed Loro Parque is just 6 minutes drive (3.7km). The park has a zoo, aquarium, tropical birds and daily shows with the killer whales, sea lions and dolphins.
The sophisticated towns of La Oratova and Puerto de la Cruz are both within 5 to 10 minutes drive away. Enjoy the historic streets and Canarian restaurants in La Oratova and relax at the beautiful Lago Martianez pools in Puerto de la Cruz.
