How Hot?

The ideal time to visit Latvia is from April through to September, with July and August the peak tourist season.

The average temperature in summer is 61ºF, though evenings can feel quite cool. Winter in Latvia starts in mid-December and lasts until mid-March, winter temperatures can be extreme with fierce snowfall throughout the season, average temperatures are 25ºF during the day.

Out and About

Latvia has an extensive coastline that stretches for 500km and is lined with major seaports, sandy beaches and beautiful sand dunes. The countryside is full of walking and cycling trails bursting with picture perfect medieval villages, hidden castles, fortresses and churches.

The capital, Riga is certainly very lively and full of cobbled streets and art-nouveau buildings in the historic centre which is in fact a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As well as having many historical and cultural attractions, there are many of cafes, bars and restaurants to cater for the many visitors and even a zoo which is the oldest zoo in North Europe.

Take a step back in time and visit Cesis, the best preserved and most authentic example of the old, pre-war Latvia. There is plenty to see here with it's labyrinthine narrow streets, stone buildings, crumbling castle ruins and Museum of History of Art it really is worth a visit.

The most visited town in Latvia has got to be Sigulda, it is such a beautiful town and is often dubbed the Switzerland of Vidzeme. Sigulda offers many nature, culture and history monuments such as the beautiful valley, caves, old fort hills and stone walled castles of knights. There are many opportunities for skiing in the winter and there is also a winter sports centre that houses the luge and bobsleigh track.

There are so many wonderful and beautiful sights to be seen in Latvia, definitely a must for those with a keen interest in history.

Latvian cuisine consists of mainly fish due to its location near the Baltic Sea. Meat is used in most main dishes. Other ingredients found in local dishes include potatoes, cabbage, onions and egg. Most of the food is generally fatty and use few spices. If it's soup you like Latvia is the place to go. Noodle soup, Sorrel soup and Nettle soup are very popular.

Latvian cheese is traditionally served during the celebration of Jani or midsummer. Dine in relaxing restaurants or local tavernas serving local traditional food. Local snack bars are scattered around the area.
