Lake Garda

Lake Garda Hotels

Lake Garda is located in the north-east of Italy, dividing the regions of Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino Alto-Adige. The large lake is long and slim, stretching from north to south.

How Hot?

The weather in Lake Garda is pleasant all year round with the lake acting like a solar panel, storing heat in the summer and releasing it in the winter which keeps conditions mild.

The average temperature in the summer months is 28ºC (82ºF) although temperatures can sometimes rise above 30ºC (86ºF) which can make it quite uncomfortable. The average temperature between December and February is 7ºC (45ºF) and with approx 4 hrs of sunshine so there is quite a difference from the summer months.

Rainfall is at it's maximum in spring and late autumn so it is advisable to take an umbrella to ensure you don't get caught out. It is also possible to get snow at the height of winter but it is more likely as you move up to higher ground.

Out and About

Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian Lakes and cannot be beaten in terms of spectacular scenery. Lake Garda is home to enchanting towns such as the ancient Roman town of Sirmione where you can see a fantastic castle, the Caves of Catullo and a pampering thermal spa.

One of the best ways to see the fantastic scenery is to take the picturesque cable car from Malcesine up to Monte Baldo. The cable car is unique as the upper section in the cabin slowly rotates, offering some fantastic views all over Lake Garda. The abundance of mountains means the area is a haven for hiking and Monte Baldo is popular for skiing in winter.

Day trips from Lake Garda to Verona, Milan and Venice are easy as there are direct train routes from Peschiera. A trip to Verona is not complete without a visit to the famous arena which is host to the celebrated open air Opera season and attracts over 22,000 spectators. Venice is full of Gothic Palaces, intimate art galleries and opera houses and with so much history and culture it is worth a visit.

Another worthwhile trip is the town of Desenzano del Garda which has some pleasant winding historic streets between the town's castle on it's hill and the lakeshore below. There is a peaceful little harbour with many little cafes which are just perfect for some light refreshments. The town is also popular among partying northern Italians who flock here on a Saturday night to eat, drink and parade in the streets before partying the night away in the local clubs.

For a fun, family day out, why not visit Gardaland which is one of Europe's largest theme parks and provides thrills and spills for all the family. There is also a waterpark, safari park and Movieland park so there will never be a dull moment.

Out for Lunch!

Lake Garda is known for its locally grown food or taken from the lake. The cuisine is prepared with great quality food and fresh ingredients taken from the local area. There are various towns on the lake and each has a different way of preparing dishes. One of the most popular dishes on the Lake is fresh sun dried fish. If its pizza and pasta you love then you're in luck. Lake Garda offers over 500 varieties of pasta. The food on the Lake has a big German and Italian influence to it.

Restaurants are found everywhere, whatever town or village you visit you will never be short of choice. Cafes, bistros and ice-cream parlours are also a big hit in Lake Garda. To discover the real cuisine travel slightly out of the way of the town and village centres. This will take you into the more residential areas where there are local restaurants offering a good variety of traditional food to try out.
