Kefalonia

Kefalonia Hotels

As the largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia is a popular choice for holidaymakers thanks to it's mild climate and glorious beaches. Kefalonia is one of the greenest islands, blanketed in forests of Fir trees, olive groves and vineyards. There are some great beaches but as the island is rich with legend, myths and historical sites there are also some great places to see.

How Hot?

Kefalonia enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers which begin to rise in May and last through to October. July and August are the hottest months with average highs of 84ºF (29ºC).

Out and About

Kefalonia has escaped mass tourism and was the location for the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The film was a huge success and has put Kefalonia firmly on the list of places to visit.

There are numerous caves with the Melissani and Drongarati, and Agalaki caves being the most visited. Melissani cave stopped being a cave in ancient times when it's roof collapsed leaving what looks like a lake at the bottom of a sink hole.

A popular spot for hiking is Mt Enos which is the tallest island mountain in Greece. Mt Enos rises to 1627m and is crowned by a forest of protected national park. There are some fantastic views to be had so definitely a worthwhile trip for those who enjoy hiking.

Although many of the endangered Loggerhead turtles nest in nearby Zante, a lot of them do come to Kaminia and Skala beaches to lay their eggs with the nesting season coinciding with the holiday season (May to August).

Watersports are popular on the island and while many of them take place in the commercial holiday resorts there are plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling around the island. Sailing is another popular activity and is a great way to explore the surrounding islands.

So if you enjoy outdoor activities and watersports, Kefalonia has certainly got lots to offer.

Out for Lunch!

Kefalonia is known for its several Italian eateries throughout the island as well as traditional Greek menus. Argostoli and Lassi offer a wide variety of different cuisines in the restaurants going away from the traditional Greek cuisine. these areas are more catered for tourists looking for Mediterranean food. Chinese and Indian dishes are available in some restaurant as well as fish but this tends to be expensive throughout the island.

Lamb and chicken are served in almost every restaurant as is pork. The most famous dish served is Kefalonian Meat Pie, found anywhere that serves food. There are little local tavernas scattered around the island where you will be able to try local produce and traditional dishes. Fast food outlets are cropping up here and there as well as luxury restaurants.
