Kas

Kas still preserves its small-town charm, with narrow cobbled streets and novel boutique shops, a small step back in time. The lack of beach in Kas has probably contributed to the fact that the resort has not been taken over by tourism.

The transfer time from Dalaman Airport is just under 3 hours and from Antalya Airport a little under 4 hours.

Just love Kas, the people are so friendly and helpful and it still retains that traditional Turkish feel. The harbour is great to sit and people watch and the restaurants are all very good.

Was quite busy during our visit as we stayed during Bayram, but the larger hotels are not part of the main town so the harbour and old part still retain their character. We visited for a day last year and decided to come back and stay this year - didn't regret it.

I've been to Kas many times. It's beautiful, unspoilt and genuine. Very little British influence - no large screen TV bars, English breakfasts or pie and chips here! It's gorgeous. Beautiful shops, amazing food and great bars.

Kas is an absolute gem of a place - lots of fabulous restaurants and bars although if you want pie, chips and gravy or an Irish bar forget it - there's none of that in Kas thank goodness. This place has very little British influence (this is why it is so charming) and thankfully it is very Turkish and is a really popular holiday destination for Turks, Germans and Americans.

Kas is the place to go if you enjoy paragliding, kayaking, canyoning etc as it is an activity metropolis. Not really suitable to small kids as the nearest sandy beaches are a drive away - this is also a good thing if you are looking for a more adult centered holiday. Lots of beautiful shops selling local clothes, jewellery, spices, teas and lots of other stuff. There is something for every budget.

If you want a restful holiday without the thumping music then Kas is for you, otherwise stay away. Nice mix of Germans, Dutch, Turkish and Danish with few British, Lovely.

Beaches

There is no actual beach in Kas but many of the cafes and pensions have constructed wooden platforms on the rocks with access to the sea for those who want to take a dip in the sea to cool down. There is seating available and they will offer snacks and drinks too.

There is a little pebble beach (Kucuk Cakil), just beyond the police station, in the main hotel area. The beach is small and there are 2 cafe/restaurants for refreshments.

If you don't mind jumping on the bus, you can take the 30 minute trip to the pretty Kaputas Beach. The beautiful sandy cove has amazing turquoise blue waters, it really is picture perfect. The beach is accessed via lots of steps and there are no facilities so make sure you take water and snacks with you.

Things to Do

Kas is certainly the place for those who like the outdoors and participating in outdoor activities.

There are many boat trips available from here, so whether it's a lazy day at sea or exploring the many coves, you will no doubt find a boat trip to suit.

Kas is one of the best places to dive in Turkey and you can see a whole host of sea creatures and marine life and many wrecks and ruins on the sea bed too. There are at least 30 different dive sites, all of which are within 20 minutes of the harbour. With so much to see under the water, you will not be disappointed.

For the more adventurous, there is paragliding which is very popular here. The scenery is stunning and it can take approx 30 minutes for your descent which is plenty of time to admire the view of Kas and the island of Castellorizo which is across the sea. If you are new to the sport you can of course paraglide with a qualified pilot.

If you want to venture into the mountains and see a little bit more of the real Turkey, then you may want to go on a jeep safari where you will visit some of the more remote areas in off-road vehicles and come across little villages that have not changed for centuries.

If you prefer to see the countryside at a more leisurely pace, then you could hire a bike and cycle along the Lycian Way and cycle through the canyons and mountains. The views are amazing and the scenery is breathtaking, certainly worth making the effort in escaping the beach for the day.

Out and About

There are plenty of restaurants offering a variety of dishes so whether it's pizza or kebab you fancy then you will find something to your liking here. There are also lots of tavernas down at the seafront if you fancy sampling some of the freshly caught fish.

There are a few bars and a number of pensions but in general nightlife is very low key so if you want to party all night then you are best venturing to one of the larger resorts such as Bodrum or Marmaris.

Nearby Attractions

If the many ruins and historical buildings are of interest, there are plenty of places to visit where you will see old churches, tombs and ampitheatres. Many of these historical towns such as Kalkan are only a short bus ride away and definitely worth the trip. The Roman remains at Xanthos, the former capital of Turkey are well worth seeing. There is an ancient amphitheatre and various other ruins, all of which date back to the 8th century BC.

There are a couple of waterparks nearby, one at Calis Beach and one at the Grand Hotel at Ovacik. These are great fun for all the family and a great way to cool down.

Lots of people take the 20 minute boat trip to the Greek Island of Meis. It is a small island where you will get a true taste of Greece which makes a nice day out.
