Out and About

Karpathos is one of the most beautiful and exciting places in the island world and with nice beaches, dreamy nature and pretty mountain villages, it is clear to see why.

Among the pretty little villages is Lefkos which is a little fishing village and worth a visit. The village of Aperi used to be the capital and is situated on a height of 320m, there are small churches, a little square and a fountain in the village. The mountain village of Menetes was built during the Middle Ages and has an archaeological museum, many churches and breathtaking views.

If you are looking to take in a little culture, visit Pigadia where you will find the Cave of Poseidon which is a sculptured tomb or sanctuary which is thought to be dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. Tombs from the Minoan and Mycenaean era have also been found in the surrounding area.

There are many beaches, coves and rocky shores on the island with the best beaches to be found in Lefkos, where there is even a nudist beach. There are many small beaches in Karpathos which are away from the crowds which is ideal for a quiet, relaxing day in the sun.

There are no huge departments stores to be found but there are plenty of shops if you need newspapers, clothes or basic amenities. There are many shops that sell the usual tourist souvenirs and you can also buy local honey, olive oil and wine.

There is plenty in the way of nightlife, perhaps not quite as rowdy as some resorts but plenty of bars and nightclubs for those who want to enjoy a night out. Two of the liveliest places are probably Pigadia and Karpathos.

Out for Lunch!

Karpathos serves mainly traditional Greek food in its restaurants. Bread is very popular in Karpathos coming in a variety of flavours including Armotyri - salty bread, Meriari - made of full fat, and Alevria - cookie form. The local speciality is Makarounes, a dish made up of onions and pasta. Whilst here try Bizanti, lamb filled with rice or Hontrs, minced meat with wheat.

You can dine in luxury restaurants throughout the island where you can try some of the local specialities and traditional dishes. If its a snack that you would like, then you will find snack bars on most street corners, serving traditional Greek snacks as well as International fast food.
