Heraklion is the capital of the island and as you expect is a exceptionally busy and lively. The core of the city is enclosed by a Venetian wall and the city oozes historical features. The main square in the resort is home to a variety of cafes, bars and tavernas to suit all budgets and tastes, with more in the narrow streets close to the square. An array of gift shops and supermarkets can also be found throughout the town.Read more about: Beaches | Nearby Attractions | Quick Facts | Heraklion Reviews

As a resort it doesn't really have that much to offer, no beach, not too many restaurants. There were plenty of bars and the nightlife was very busy at night. Some local history and of course Knossos is a must. Would stay again but only for a weekend break. There are nicer resorts to stay in. <br />

The National Museum is really worth a visit. Some rooms were rearranged and only opened in May.

There are plenty of beaches around Heraklion; the beaches in the north are often windy but are shallower and the ones to the south are less crowded and calmer. Some beaches are sandy and some are made up of pebbles and most can be reached by the public bus service.
There are plenty of archaeological sites of the region which include the Minoan Palaces of Knossos and Phaestos, the Caves of Matala, the Medieval Castles and the Byzantine monasteries.
Heraklion Airport is about 10 km away - transfer time approximately 15 minutes.
