Beaches

There is a choice of beaches around the Gros Islet quarter, most of which have a range of water sports on offer. There is a peaceful beach on Pigeon Island; the long sweeping sands which run from Gros Islet out to Pigeon Island, overlooking Rodney Bay; the sheltered inlets at Cotton Bay and Smugglers Cove both have sandy beaches and, a little further north the sands of Cariblue Beach.

Things to Do

Visit Pigeon Island which is connected to the mainland via a causeway. The island is under the care of the Saint Lucia National Trust and has a visitor centre. You can follow trails through the natural scenery, admire the coastline views from Signal Hill, explore the remains of the former Army Barracks and Fort Rodney, relax on the beach and stay for lunch. Pigeon Island also provides the setting for the famous St Lucia Jazz Festival which usually runs for around 2 weeks at the beginning of May.

Go horse-riding along the beach, or play a round of golf at the St Lucia Golf and Country Club. Take a sunset cruise, go deep sea fishing or dolphin and whale watching. Take an ATV adventure tour through old plantations and rainforests, get off the beaten track and discover the natural countryside, villages and scenic vistas.

Out and About

The Gros Islet Quarter covers the northern tip of St Lucia with a coastline of bays and coves, a green interior and the actual town of Gros Islet. The town lies between Pigeon Island and the more touristic district of Rodney Bay.

Dance in the streets and soak up the atmosphere at the Friday Night Street Party. This a joyful evening filled with the sounds of calypso and reggae with plenty of stalls and street vendors for your fill of fresh fish and barbecued chicken.

Nearby Attractions

Rodney Bay Village houses a shopping mall, bars and restaurants and lies on the edge of Rodney Bay Marina. Here you can also relax on the sands of Reduit Beach or take advantage of the watersports.

Castries, the capital, is approx 10km away by road and here you can stroll around the Derek Walcott Square; shop the duty free malls of Point Seraphine at the cruise port or La Place Carnege by the harbour, browse the Craft Market and visit the historic site of Fort Charlotte.

Take a boat trip to the tourist attractions at the south of the island and see the majestic Piton peaks or take a diving tour to some of the many reefs and dive sites.
