Very difficult to give one rating for what are virtually two cities, the old and the new one: The new town is reasonably modern and so are the attitudes of the people. A place to enjoy and to feel good. Unlike the old town, where white skin will inevitably have some unpleasant crook stick on you, forcing himself onto you as your tour guide. The poor student will not tire to show you all the shops he's liaised with and where vendors will become a bit upset if you don't buy right away. If you don't buy anything he'll expect at least 100Dhs as pay to help his studies. These guys are handy if you are looking for Gandja, but extremely annoying if you just want your peace, My tip: stay out of the Medina and you'll love Fes, in fact I have been back for the second time and my third and fourth visit are already scheduled!

Beaches

Fes is an inland medieval city, approx 90 minutes drive from the beaches of Rabat.

Things to Do

Browse the maze of ancient streets of the old Medina; a myriad of mosques, alleys, donkeys and riads. Experience the intensity of the Fez souks where shops, stalls and artisans sell carpets, leather, clothing, pottery, fabric, jewellery, food and spices. There are several gates into the Medina, the most notable being the ornately mosaic tiled Bab Bou Jeloud (the blue gate).

The city has a number of museums to visit including the Dar El-Batha Museum of arts and crafts, which is housed in a former 19th century palace with an attractive courtyard and garden; the Nejjarine Museum of Wood which is located near the Henna Souk in a beautiful building and; the Arms Museum which has thousands of exhibits and is located in a 16th century fort with magnificent views over the Medina.

Out and About

There are many cafes within the Medina (Fez el-Bali) and a few restaurants in the newer Fez el Djedid district, which is a striking contrast to the old city and houses many gardens and palaces. Ville Nouvelle is the modern and more westernised district with wide streets, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.

Just outside the Medina the Jnan Sbil Gardens, complete with lake and picnic spots, provide a welcome retreat from the noise of the souks.

Nearby Attractions

In the hills on the outskirts of the city, the ruins of the Merendid Tombs are a popular destination to hike to and provide panoramic views over Fez.

The ancient city of Meknes is approx 70km away and offers much historic architecture and attractions including the souks and the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis.
