Dahab

Located just 60 miles from Sharm el Sheikh the resort of Dahab covers a large area with a long stretch of golden coastline. Made up of several smaller areas; Masbat (seafront) is the place where the first tourists arrived to enjoy the extensive stretch of sandy beach. Laguna-Dahab City is in the southern area and home to the more exclusive hotels and also the main hub for surf-activities in the area. Mashraba is in the south-eastern part of Dahab and has a long beach, several hotels, restaurants and a quiet atmosphere, and in the northern area is Assala the old Bedouin village and home to Eel Garden Beach named due to its close proximity to the popular Eel Garden dive spot.

An entry Visa is required for Egypt and costs approx 15 GBP per person.

The hotel provides a shuttle bus to Dahab for shopping, a varied choice of restaurants and bars. Dahab is a friendly, 'chilled' town with easy access to various water sports and excursions to alternative diving/snorkelling sites, St Catherine's Monastery, coloured/white canyons, Sinai mountains or further afield e.g. Cairo, Jerusalem, Petra, Dead Sea.

Ahab is 5km away from the hotel so there are 3 free shuttle buses which go into town daily. Dahab is a small town catering for tourists with excellent restaurants to eat in overlooking the sea. The town is a hub for divers boasting numerous dive centres along the sea front. People are very friendly and do not hassle tourists, there are some great little cafes to sit in, time stands still here.

Dahab is quite a small town, it has plenty of little shops. There are quite a few restaurants if you fancy a meal out - speak to the hotel staff they will recommend places for you. The beach in Dahab is not brilliant, the one at the hotel (Iberotel Dahabeya) is much better.

The town of Dahab is a strange one. You can't really call it a resort but it is fantastic. The first time we went there we did not go far enough into the town and as part of the town resembles a wild west ghost town with dust and tumbleweed the main residents we didn't think much of it. However, this time we walked all the way through the ghost town bit and over the bridge where it suddenly transforms into a diver's paradise with a cool, laid-back bohemian feel to it somewhere between Cains in Australia and Brighton! It's fab. A real mix with market stalls selling Egyptian goods all along one side and a string of restaurants along the seaside where you can sit back, relax, eat, read and watch the divers having lessons in the sea. We had lunch a couple of times there with our daughter paddling on the beach literally right next to our table - so cool!

The town of Dahab is quite run down by our standards but look beyond that and you will see how hard they try for the tourist. Plenty of beach side restaurants and trips out, with local people to show you the sights.

Whilst we stay approx 20 minutes from the town of Dahab we did visit the town on our hired quads and also to visit another hotel with a friend who now runs his own hotel in Dahab. The people are great though the town is not busy due to the rumours of violence of which we did not see anything, quite the opposite.

As a resort it's fantastic if you do wind surfing or diving. Not much outside our hotel (Iberotel Dahabeya). Dahab town has shops but only small. Not much for teenagers at this resort, so would best suit families with small children and couples wanting a hot relaxing holiday.

In Dahab they have about a mile long pier with shops and restaurants to suit all tastes'. It is not really a place for small children, as limited attractions. They have camel rides, horses, quad biking and sea trips or you can just walk and take in the views.

I think the resort is an ideal place, very quiet in comparison to Sharm, great for a relaxing time. I'm a big time wind surfer so the strong wind is ideal conditions when it blows but also cools the heat down to a bearable level. The location is great for swimming. The snorkelling and diving sites are nearby but there are many more a short drive away. It's always amazing however many times you go snorkelling you see so many different fish and coral types from site to site. The fish books can't list the many varieties you get to see close up.

3rd visit. We go to completely switch off. If your looking for entertainment and bustle then Dahab doesn't seem like the place to go. Anyone going to Dahab should be aware that it is quite different to Sharm, there was a high percentage of older people especially Brits. We visited the Blue Hole and went Quad Biking, Saint Catherine monastery was interesting. Generally the locals (Beduin) were so nice, can't do enough to help and no hassle.

The town itself was easy to access and had plenty of restaurants and clubs if required, but appeared a little down at heel. Our arrival was like entering a war zone - half finished buildings and terrible roads, but was what we expected. We did enjoy getting out into the desert, but not a lot else on offer unless you wanted a boat trip.

Okay if you only want a beach holiday, sightseeing limited as we had been to Taba in the past and had done the lot.

Things to do

Snorkelling and diving opportunities here are excellent, with reef sites found close to the shore including the Blue Hole (for experienced divers only), Eel Garden home to a large colony of garden eels, the Canyon a spectacular underwater canyon, and the Lighthouse ideal for beginners due to its large sandy slopes and gentle drop off.

Dahab has three unique areas for windsurfing; a 2.5km sheltered lagoon offers a safe area for beginners due to the shallow water and long sandy spit separating it from the open sea; the second area has calm, flat water conditions ideal for speed sailing, and lastly 'Kamikazee' also known as the wave area this is a popular spot for advanced windsurfers enjoying waves of up to 3 metres high.

Again the warm calm waters and reliable offshore breeze also make this a haven for kite-surfing, a lagoon area for beginners is available and a second area in the open sea with a sandy landing beach.

The order of the day here is simply to enjoy the large expanse of beach and relax, though you can take a safari by jeep, quad bike or camel into the desert and up into the mountains.

If you're looking to explore a little of Egypt there are a number of excursions to enjoy from Dahab, the ancient St. Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai are just 35km away, further a field take a day or overnight trip to Cairo to visit the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, or tour the temples and the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. For some family fun Sharm el Sheikh around 90-minutes drive away has two aqua parks along with plenty of shopping opportunities.

Out and about

Dahab has two markets worth a visit; the Assala Market is a traditional outdoor market selling everything from perfumes to silver jewellery and decorative carpets to fresh spices and teas. Ghazala Market is unique for an Egyptian market, as the stalls are placed inside an air-conditioned building, great for a break from the heat. All the usual goods can be found here such as rugs, spices and leather items.

The Masbat area offers a wide selection of restaurants with local and international cuisines available; try smoking a shisha in a chill-out café, there's also a variety of nightlife with a choice of cocktail and dance bars.
