Natural Surroundings

Cruz de Tejeda is a scenic location for nature lovers, walkers, cyclists and hikers or those with an interest in traditional culture and rural life on the Gran Canaria. The region is rich with protected nature reserves, fruit farms and almond groves with endless breathtaking views across Gran Canaria and beyond.

Things to Do

Cruz de Tejeda is surrounded by three of the highest peaks on the island. At Pico de las Nieves, the highest, which is just 6km south of Tejeda, you can hike or cycle through the pine forests to the summit for far-reaching panoramic views. At the El Nublo Nature Reserve, you can see the huge monolith of El Roque Nublo and the El Fraile, which is smaller and said to resemble a monk praying.

A market selling crafts and local produce takes place in the mornings, next to the namesake stone cross of Tejeda. There are also markets at the weekends in the nearby village of San Mateo (14km) and the town of Santa Brigida (20km). Just outside of Santa Brigida (at Monte Lentiscal) you can enjoy spectacular views from the Bandama Peak over the Bandama Crater.

Out and About

In the neighbouring traditional town of Tejeda (9km) sit on one of the benches surrounding the Church of Nuestra Senoro de Socorro and admire the amazing views of the surrounding roques and gullies. The town has several museums and information centres including the Tejeda Traditions Museum, the Abraham Cardenes Museum of Sculptures and the Medicinal Plant Centre. Visit during the first 2 weeks in February for the traditional Almond Blossom festival.

Nearby Attractions

Just outside of the town, at the Bentayga Archaeological Park you can visit the eco-museum and see the ancient cave paintings and rock carvings in the Kings Caves (Cuevas del Rey), at the historically sacred Roque Bentayga.
