The area surrounding the hotel is on the main housing with other hotels. It is very hilly and steep, steps down to the shopping area and back; there is a free shuttle bus to the beach which could be used. The beach was not spectacular by any means and it was good fortune the hotel (Belvedere Hotel) facilities were good or it could have been a long holiday.

Not a lot to do on a evening. It has a few pubs and restaurants, one beach side bar and restaurant is the perfect location for a afternoon meal.

There was plenty to do if you wanted. The views were fantastic and we were not far from Palma which was ace as you were only on the transfer bus for 15 minutes.

Quiet resort, steep hill to the local beach but worth the walk. Cala Mayor is not far from Palma central, and enough bus routes to Palma, Magaluf and Palma Nova. Lovely views from the marina, enough shops and a few local bars.

Cala Mayor is very small, a couple of pubs and restaurants. The bus stopped right outside our hotel and only cost 1.50 euro to go anywhere. Shops are mostly seaside shops and a couple of supermarkets. The beach is very safe for children and very clean, with a couple of beach bars and a beach restaurant. We love it all! It is our third visit to the Nixe Palace Hotel, and will be back next year!

Not very much to do at all. A few shops near the beach but it is not very near the hotel at all and is via about 86 steps and slopes.

There wasn't an awful lot to do but again that may have been because it was just before the start of the season. The beach was clean and generally the roads and pavements in good order. Although we didn't get the opportunity to use it there was a frequent bus service and taxis were local, arrived quickly and did not seem over-priced.

Cala Mayor is an ideal base in the winter if you want to chill out. I would say in the summer you have everything for the family or the single person with the clean beaches and bars, restaurants which are not too expensive.

The beach

The fine white sandy beach in Cala Mayor is 200-metres in length and 80-metres wide, it's protected on both sides by rocky outcrops keeping the water calm and clear. There are plenty of the usual facilities available with pedalos, sun-loungers and parasols available for hire as well as public showers and toilets, beach bars and restaurants. There are also ramps for wheelchair users and lifeguards on duty during the summer months.

Things to do

The Cala Nova sailing school is less than 1km from the resort centre and offers training courses for windsurfing and sailing during the peak holiday periods. The resort is also well placed for other sporting activities such as the Royal Bendinat Golf Club and the exclusive marina at Puerto Portals.

Situated in Cala Mayor is Joan Miro's old house and studio which is open to the public (Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro) and features a large permanent exhibition of his work.

At the neighbouring village of Genova only 1km away are the Cuevas de Genova, these caves are the smallest on Majorca and may not be as impressive as the Cuevas de Drach, but interesting all the same.

Out and about

Cala Mayor offers a number of restaurants, cafes and bars serving tapas and international cuisines. Nightlife is limited within the resort, though the great feature about staying here is that it is within easy reach of the islands capital where an even wider selection of dining options, bars and nightclubs can be found.

Cala Mayor does not have a large selection of shops, though within easy walking distance is the shopping centre called Porto Pi, which offers numerous shops, eating and leisure facilities.

As a suburb of Palma, the resort has good bus connections providing a convenient way to reach neighbouring resorts.

Nearby activities

A very popular evening attraction is the Pirates Adventure (Els Pirates), which is based just outside of Magaluf (approx 8km away). A pirate themed dinner and show, with performances most evenings, there's a special late night adult's only performance in addition to the family show.

The Marineland which is located in the nearby resort of Portal Nous is a popular attraction for families with young children, the park features an aquarium with rays and sharks, and the shows includes performing sea lions, parrots and dolphins.

Further family fun can be enjoyed at the Western Waterpark found just outside the resort of Magaluf, the park is full of thrilling water-slides and fun pools for all ages to enjoy. Other fun attractions include Go-Karting and the Katmandu Fun-House both in Magaluf, and Golf Fantasia found in the heart of Palma Nova featuring three enjoyable courses.

Full of historical sites and museums Palma makes an ideal day excursion; visit the Gothic sights of La Seu Cathedral and Basilica de Sant Francesc, Palace de L'Almudaina found next to the cathedral and Castell de Bellver the only circular castle in Spain.

Enjoy the scenic train journey from Palma to Soller, it takes a magnificently picturesque route and with vintage carriages is a pleasurable and popular tourist attraction. Once in Soller you can extend your trip onto Port de Soller, where a vintage tram connects with the arrival of the train.
