Beaches

The most popular beach, particularly with the Spanish, in the old quarter is Caleta Beach on the north west corner of the peninsula, heading down from the Castillo de Santa Catalina. In the new quarter, Victoria Beach is more popular with holiday-makers and extends for approx 3km with plenty of shops and restaurants across the road. In between the two you will find the Santa Maria beach.

Things to Do

Of historic and cultural interest this walled city has plenty to offer from the 1st century Roman Amphitheatre to castles and fortifications; museums and churches. Or you can simply enjoy ambling around the maze of narrow streets, relaxing on the beaches or soaking up the atmosphere in the city squares.

The Torre Tavira, an 18th century watchtower, offers panoramic city views from the top or you can take a guided tour of the city via the Camera Obscura. The Cathedral dates back to the 17th century and you can see its golden yellow dome from all around. A visit to the Cathedral should include the crypt, the museum and a walk up the tower for the views.

The Cadiz Carnival is one of the most important in Spain and takes place in February each year.

Out and About

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and opportunities to enjoy traditional Spanish dishes. Nightlife revolves around flamenco clubs, tapas bars and terrace bars. Shops abound from everyday essentials to designer brands and a large market is held on Monday mornings. For modern shopping and leisure facilities, you could head for the Bahia Sur in the San Fernando district.

Outside of the Cathedral is one of the city's many plazas, adorned with palm trees and lined with historic buildings and terrace cafes; such as the Plaza del Mina or the Plaza San Antonio on the opposite side of the peninsula.

Take time out to relax and stroll amid the topiary trees in the waterfront gardens of Park Genoves and wander around the corner to see the imposing red brick Gran Teatro Falla; you might even catch a performance.

Nearby Attractions

The city of Jerez is approx 30km away and tours are readily available. Rota and Novo Sancti Petri are approx 50km away, in opposite directions.
