Bodrum

Bodrum is a city with plenty to offer from its prestigious modern marina and designer boutiques to it's historic cultural attractions and colourful markets. The resort can be very busy, loud and lively at night but, by day, you can still find the tranquility that comes with sunlit whitewashed buildings, dripping bouganvillea and sailing craft bobbing about on the turquoise waters.

I love Bodrum and have done for 32 years. Get out and explore the peninsula and the fabulous culture.

Holiday Date:1st Sep 2017
Accommodation:Istankoy Bodrum Hotel
Room:Double Or Twin
Board:Bed & Breakfast
(4 suns)

Although a bit quieter there this year due to drop in British tourism, we still had a great time as usual. Instankoy is near all bars, cafes, Marina and beach, so if you're feeling lazy all these are on the doorstep. If feeling more energetic there's plenty of places nearby you can get to on the dolmus or by taxi or even walk if you're up to it.

A lovely place to explore to find something of interest for all.

Beautiful resort, wouldn't go anywhere else in Turkey.

Beaches

Bodrum is set behind a wide bay which has the Bodrum Marina on the western side and a narrow beach on the eastern side. The bay is divided by the headland upon which sits St Peters Castle - a defining landmark and beautifully illuminated at night.

Things to Do

Sitting so prominently in the bay, it is hard not to want to explore St Peters Castle. Even if you have no interest in it's dungeons, exhibits or it's history, which dates back to the 15th century; the views from the ramparts are fantastic. Whilst at the Castle, you can go into the Museum of Underwater Archaeology which houses all sorts of treasures preserved from ships wrecked in the surrounding waters over the centuries past.

The huge Bodrum Antique Theatre (amphi-theatre) dates back to the 4th century and offers amazing views over the city. It sits on the main Bodrum to Turgutreis road, approx 500 metres back from the Marina.

Out and About

Around the marina, which is frequented by superyachts and their moneyed owners, you will find expensive restaurants, luxury shops, designer boutiques and upmarket grocery shopping. It is a chic area for strolling and browsing and the nightlife is sedate and dignified.

Behind the beach, there are countless bars and clubs with a whole range of atmospheres, from the chilled to the wild and rowdy. The restaurants offer Turkish, eastern and western menus and in the evenings they set tables out on the beach. Nightlife is vibrant and there are a number of clubs, perhaps most notably the Halikarnas which has everything from the outdoor chill-out lounge to the DJ zone, the indulgent Arabesque lounge and the fabulous stage shows.

The weekly markets are held on Tuesday for clothing and textiles and on Friday for food and local produce.

Nearby Attractions

The neighbouring bay of Gumbet offers a wide range of water-sports, or you can spend a day at the Dedeman Bodrum Aqua Park, to which there is a free daily shuttle service (end of May to end of September).

For authentic hand-crafted items, head for the Artisan shops at the Dibeklihan Arts & Craft Village on the outskirts of Ortakent (9km).
