Out and About
The Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is made up of 5 connected volcano's, 2 of which are extinct, 1 is dormant and 2 are very active. There are fewer beaches here but the ones that have formed are very beautiful and offer great conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling.
The Big Island is one of a few places in the world where you can see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The humpback whales tend to come to the Big Island to mate and give birth and can easily be spotted from the shore or from one of the many tours available.
One of the most beautiful places in Hawaii is said to be the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden which is situated in a valley bordering the ocean. There are over 2000 different species of plant and you will pass through coconut groves, mango and monkeypod trees, palm jungles and a giant tree forest. You will also pass waterfalls, streams and at some points you will even reach the ocean, it really is a glorious site.
Another popular attraction is the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo, the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. The grounds are filled with orchids, tropical palms, clumping bamboos and tropical rhododendrons, and as if that is not enough, there are giant anteaters, two-toed sloth, lemurs, spider monkeys and a white Bengal Tiger to name but a few of the 80 animal species that can be found here.
These are just some of the things to do on the Big Island so why not come along and see this beautiful place and all it has to offer for yourself.
