Arta Town

Steeped in history, Arta remains very much a traditional Majorcan village with narrow and winding streets. Its main draw for visitors is the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, set on a hill the sanctuary dates from the 13th century with the walls added during the 16th century, views at the top of the 180 steps are well worth the climb.

Arta is an affluent little town with a pedestrianised main street featuring shops, bars, coffee shops, tapas bars and restaurants. Every Tuesday is market day selling local fruit and vegetables, clothes, trinkets and local handicrafts.

The beach

Although the town of Arta is inland, there are unspoilt and beautiful sandy beaches only a short drive away.

Around 9 km to the north of Arta is the hidden beach of Cala Torta, this beach has a large expanse of soft white sand surrounded by low mountain sides. It's not the easiest to reach as a 4-wheel drive is recommended for the 2 km gravel road which leads up to the beach. There are no facilities here as the area is undeveloped however there is a small kiosk beach bar providing refreshment. Its remote location makes this beach a popular choice with nudist bathers.

Cala Mesquida beach is not as remote and is found again around 9 km from Arta town. Set in an open bay this picturesque sandy beach is 350-metres in length and backed by sand dunes which stretch far inland. There are facilities on this beach with sun-loungers and umbrellas to hire, and there is a restaurant and a couple of beach bars for refreshments. When the conditions are right this is a popular beach for windsurfing.
