Alicante

The prime attraction is the Castillo de Santa Barbara, a huge medieval fortress overlooking Alicante from the north. It is easily accessible by a cable car up through the mountain from Jovellanas Avenue. The harbour is a pleasant stroll along walkways, past relaxing cafes. From here, a ferry departs for day trips to the island of Tabarca, which was once a refuge for pirates, an 18th century fortified town and settling ground for Italian fishermen!

Not a great deal to do in the city unless you like shopping. Traipsing around the city was wearing on the feet and we didn't find much to do in the way of entertainment. Walk around the marina was okay, visit to the castle was very good, boat trip to Isla Tabarca was excellent and most definitely our best day out. Lovely beach at Playa de Postiguet in front of the city. Not our best holiday, but we do prefer the more rural/cultural areas to visit.

We had a wonderful holiday. We visited Santa Barbara castle which is a must if you are visiting Alicante. Second day we spent on Playa del Postiguet beach, lovely beach but there were so many fag butts on the floor! Also people walking around trying to illegally sell you things whilst you're trying to relax is really off putting! The third day we went to Rio Safari Elche in Santa Pola which was very enjoyable. Fourth day we went to Parque El Palmeral - was a bit disappointed when none of the water features had been switched off but still a very beautiful garden. Fifth day we went to Aqua Natura water park - what a disappointment. We paid 29 euro each to get in which is quite expensive considering half of the rides were shut and half of the pool was closed off, we were bored by 3pm and left. The only good thing really was the sea lions. The sixth day we went to Marque museum which was very interesting, it got a little samey towards the end, and then we spent the rest of the day walking around and getting familiar with the area. Our final day we just spent a few hours on the beach opposite our hotel before going back to the airport. Food was very good in Alicante, we went to a different place for dinner every night. Good pricing also.

Not a lot to do around the hotel (Express By Holiday Inn) so some kind of transport is essential to get you into Alicante itself or other local towns, resorts. Taxis are always available and there is a bus stop opposite the hotel.

Alicante is very cosmopolitan and there is plenty to see and do for a short stay. Lots of good bars and restaurants give one the choice of fine dining to suit all tastes.

Beach was nice, a lot of shops to look around. There are various boat trips available if you go from the beach towards the docks. At the top end of Alicante, Hercules CF resides - If they are playing at home and you enjoy football then it's a good opportunity to watch a match. There are a lot of restaurants/bars near the cathedral with some decent food. There's a castle near the beach with a lift that takes you to the top (if you walk it's a long way up).

Trams are an ideal way of getting to other areas around Alicante with some fairly deserted beaches if you don't like crowds and the travel is relatively cheap. You can even get to Benidorm for 6.40 euro return (about an hour each way).

I booked this holiday after visiting Alicante for a day cruising on the Ventura. I liked it from the start as we were greeted with friendly locals, offering us a tourist sightseeing trip which we took. This gave us an overall view of what Alicante had to offer tourists.

I stayed with my daughter for one week; being a treat for passing her education degree. We had a restful holiday, but also did some touring. Alicante retains its charm, is not too commercialised (please keep it that way), with easy access to the airport and tourist areas. We visited Alicante Castle, with magnificent views and took a coastal train ride to Benidorm. That was a lovey trip and well worth the local train fee. We enjoyed an afternoon walk into the town to browse the many shops.

I would like to return to Alicante within the next few years to visit other surrounding areas. People are very friendly and the cost of living is quite reasonable. I would recommend it particularly for couples because it is not noisy, has a relaxed atmosphere, but central for touring.

Beaches

Many of Alicante's beaches are consistently awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for cleanliness and facilities. Starting at the heart of the city, the Playa del Postiguet is a 900m stretch of golden sand, backed by a palm-shaded promenade lined with bars and restaurants. To the north of the city is Playa de la Albufereta (it is here that the city originated) leading onto Playa de la Almadraba both of which are golden sandy beaches and with good facilities.

Further along the coastline is the Cabo de las Huerta, three hidden picturesque coves, two of which are nudist coves due to their remoteness and access difficulties.

One of the most popular beaches in the area is La Playa de San Juan (San Juan beach), situated just outside Alicante and easily accessible by tram, this beach boasts 7km of fine white sandy beach, offering good facilities, watersports, and a selection of bars, restaurants and Chiringuitos (beach bars).

Things to do

Standing on top of Mount Benacantil in the centre of Alicante is the Castle of Santa Barbara, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain where you can explore the well preserved castle ruins and take-in the wonderful views of the city below.

The marina features some excellent shopping facilities and refined restaurants, a great place to simply relax and gaze at the luxury yachts.

The island of Tabarca, is just off the coast of Alicante, once used as a refuge for pirates it forms part of a small archipelago and is just 1,800 metres in length and 400 metres at its widest point. An interesting day out, visitors can enjoy the crystal-clear waters, a picturesque fishing port with excellent seafood restaurants, coves and beaches, the island can be reached by a local ferry service which takes about one hour from Santa Pola Port.

The Caves of Canelobre are located at a distance of about 24 km from the city of Alicante. These spectacular prehistoric caves feature stalagmites, stalactites and weird limestone formations.

Nearby Attractions

Reachable in around 30-minutes drive time, Benidorm is the place to head for a fun day out. With plenty on offer its home to the Terra Mitica theme park and neighbouring TerraNatura zoo and aquapark, the Mundomar Sea Life and Animal Park and next to this is Aqualandia Benidorm aquapark.

The Terra Mitica theme park has adrenaline rides and kids rides, set amid ancient Mediterranean themes, with daily shows, ranging from Roman circus acts to Egyptian and Greek dancers, there's also plenty of cafes and fast food outlets to keep you going for the whole day.

The TerraNatura Aquapark features a wave pool, hydrotherapy pool, kids pool, chutes for all ages, grassed picnic areas and a sun deck with jacuzzis. TerraNatura Zoo boasts over 1500 animals living in beautifully landscaped natural habitats including many endangered species.

The Mundomar Sea Life and Animal Park is a landscaped tropical delight with plenty of animals and colourful birds. Spend the whole day here and you can watch a host of entertaining shows with dolphins and sea lions, parrots and exotic birds. Families can take a break at the children's play area and when you're hungry, there is an a'la carte restaurant as well as a cafe, snack bar and a number of kiosks to choose from.

Aqualandia Benidorm aquapark has plenty of eateries and everything you need for a fun filled day from kamikaze chutes and exhilarating rapids to the relaxing jacuzzi pool and kid's adventureland.
