An enchanting and historical city surrounded by famous beaches and modern neighbourhoods with large shopping malls. There are many bars, restaurants and night clubs in the city with many leisure attractions nearby including Abaete Lake and Park, Salvador Zoo, Pituacu Park and Parque Cidade.
Salvador
The charming cobble-stoned streets of the Pelourinho district, a World Heritage site in the Cidade Alta (High City), are full of colonial architecture, artisan shops, bars and restaurants. This is connected, by the impressive Elevador Lacerda, to the Cidade Baixa (Low City) which sits alongside the Bay.
Salvador is also home to the Fonte Nova World Cup Football Stadium and the famous Carnival which takes place every February.
Beaches
Salvador is located on a large peninsula. There are beaches all around the peninsula and whilst the bay-side beaches are picturesque and well serviced, the better ones are on the east coast, around Itapua.
Things to Do
Salvador is an ancient city divided into the upper and lower quarters and you can travel between the two via the Lacerda Elevator or the Plano Inclinado Goncalves funicular railway.
The upper quarter and Pelourinho are rich in colourful baroque and colonial architecture and the cobbled streets hold many restaurants, craft shops and museums. Here you can stroll through the squares of Praca da Se and Terreiro de Jesus, surrounded by churches and linked by the 17th century Cathedral Basilica.
In the lower quarter you can browse the craft stalls at the Mercado Modelo and there is an open top bus which runs guided tours around the city.
Out and About
Leisure attractions in and around Salvador include the Abaete Lake and protected parkland and the picturesque Dique de Tororo park and leisure lake, with its spiritual statues of Orishas.
There are also a number of large shopping malls in the surrounding neighbourhoods including Barra, Iguatemi, Lapa, Piedade and Itaigara.
Other things of Interest
The Carnival takes place every February and is an exuberant affair spread out over a week long period.
