Puerto Calero

Puerto Calero is the base for a number of water based activities, excursions and a variety of sport-fishing. Puerto Calero is not short on places to eat, whether it is a quick coffee and pastry or a good quality evening meal. The Marina is a great place to wander, look at the fabulous boats and generally soak up a bit of the luxury atmosphere.

Beaches

Puerto Calero is an exclusive and self-contained resort, known for its prestigious marina and select range of luxury hotels and villas.

The main beach at Puerto del Carmen is approx 4.5km away where you can bask on the sands or enjoy a whole host of water activities, such as banana boat rides, diving and windsurfing. This is also where you will find the liveliest nightlife venues. You can also walk to the harbour at Puerto del Carmen along the coastal path (2.5km).

Things to Do

From Puerto Calero marina you can take catamaran cruises to the Papagayo beaches, incorporating dolphin and whale spotting; submarine safaris and water taxis to Puerto del Carmen. There are diving schools catering to all abilities and opportunities for jet-skiing, kayaking and snorkelling. In addition, the surrounding waters are populated with blue marlin and tuna and there is a good choice of sport fishing trips available.

You don't have to enter the water to enjoy the Marina though, it's a great place to be, by day or by night, chilling with a coffee or something stronger, admiring the boats and enjoying the general atmosphere. Set amid the attractive walkways and squares there is a select range of designer boutiques, chic bars and international restaurants.

Puerto Calero market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can also visit the Museo de Cetaceos, the Museum of Whales, a fascinating museum with life-size replicas and intriguing displays.

Out and About

Heading south-west out of the resort you can walk along the coastal track into the small seaside village of Playa Quemada. The walk is approx 3km and a little rough in places but you will have great views of the Los Ajaches mountains and the beautiful blue sea along the way. Upon reaching Playa Quemada you can relax on the secluded black sand beach or enjoy a traditional Canarian meal in one of the delicious fresh fish restaurants.

Another great way to see some of the Canarian countryside is a horse-riding or camel safari from Lanzarote A Caballo. The centre also runs paint-balling and off road buggy tours and is located approx 3.5km inland from Puerto Calero, on the roundabout for Yaiza and Playa Quemada.

Nearby Attractions

A little further inland, the La Geria Wine Region (11km) is a remarkable sight in itself, a vast area smothered in semi-circular walled pits, in which the grapevines grow. If you wish to learn more about wine production in such an unlikely landscape, or indeed sample the finished product, you can take a guided tour at one of the bodegas.
