Athens is the capital city of Greece and is a sprawling city with plenty of historical sights, bustling port and a wealth of restaurants and shops to suit every taste and budget. As well as being historically important, Athens is also commercially important and has one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean.

Athens is busy and crowded and is spread over many districts. The old quarters of Thisson and Psirri are popular nightlife areas and has a distinctive character with its original charm. The commercial heart of the city is around Syntagma Square which is dominated by the old Royal Palace and has many major hotels and restaurants. Just beyond the city's southern edge is the bustling port of Piraeus which offers a ferry service to the outlying islands.

Things to See
One of the most famous sights in Athens has to be the Acropolis which rises out of the centre of the city. You can easily walk from the Acropolis to many other main attractions and at the same time browse the main shops or enjoy a drink at one of the many cafes along the way. Key sights include the Ancient Agora (marketplace), Kerameikos, the first cemetery and the National Archeological Museum.
Out and About
The best views of Athens can be found from the top of Lykavittos Hill where on a clear day you will see the whole city, the port of Piraeus and the island of Aegina and the Peloponnese. If you want to escape the city head out to the beaches south of Athens which can easily be reached by buses or the metro.
