The old fishing port of Adra is situated in the southwest of Costa de Almeria province. Despite featuring a castle the town of Adra remains relatively untouched by tourists, providing a great opportunity to experience real Spain.

Beaches

Long sandy beaches run the length of the town and beyond and are backed by an attractive pathway, lined with benches and palm trees. The main beach is the Poniente Beach which runs from the harbour to the west and, to the east of the harbour there are two further beaches.

Things to Do

Behind the harbour you aren't likely to miss the Torre de los Perdogonnes, standing 45 metres tall, housing the Tourist Office. Historic sights to see include the watch towers and the Parish church, dating back to the 16th century and, you can learn of the town's history at the Museum of Adra. Behind the Tower there is a small playground for children, or you can relax under the shade of the trees in the Jardincillos behind the harbour.

If you are around at the end of August you might catch the Flamenco Festival which is held on the last Saturday of the month, followed by the Adra Feria which is the annual fair held between the 5th and 10th of September.

Out and About

There are not many restaurants in the town but there are a good number of bars, many of which serve food. Being a harbour town, fresh fish and seafood is the speciality and traditional tapas is almost a matter of course.

Shopping is more about everyday essential ie, supermarkets, banking etc rather than designer shopping malls but there is a market held 2 Saturdays per month and regular buses into the larger towns.

Nearby Attractions

The town is surrounded by hiking countryside, mountains and desert landscapes. Birdwatchers will find Las Albuferas de Adra of particular interest. This is a protected conservation zone and the lagoons and wetlands provide a natural habitat for birds and fish.

The main town of Almeria and the tourist resorts of Roquestas de Mar and Aguadulce are approx 40 minutes drive from Adra.
